Emails are very effective communication tools and very popular because they are easy to compose, are delivered faster than regular mail and one can communicate with many people using one email. It is of great necessity that one gets an email address at this time and age. It is because of the popularity of emails with the masses that scammers have targeted them as a way to steal from uninformed people.

People involved in email scams know that most people have the notion that their emails are secure because of their passwords and will believe any information as fact when it is delivered to their accounts. These have given rise to what is now commonly known as spam mail. It is mainly through spam that email scams begin. It originated in Nigeria and the scammers here sent an email to victims alleging to be in possession of a large amount of money that they require help to transfer and upon giving such help one is promised a percentage of the share of the money involved in transfer. Usually the amount is very tempting and it is this that they use to trap you in a ruse that will cost you a lot. Other tempting offers that scammers use include fake lotteries or offers of products that they deem attractive to consumers like weight losing products. Another very popular scam of this kind is offers of reduced price software. When one accesses this purported software they use them as a tool to gain access to information that is private and later use this information to steal from you or steal from the people close to you posing as yourself.

Scammers also know that people place particular trust in certain organizations like banks and so they send mail posing as the banks so as to get private information from an individual. It is very difficult to know whether the information is true so one is required to confirm all communication they get from their banks through email before giving out any information. Otherwise, they will only end up as victims of email scams.

Viruses are also placed either as attachments or as links to a website in an email. These viruses paralyze your computer or any other person’s computer that receives this email. It is necessary that one should treat attachments with caution and avoid clicking links in an email. Installing a firewall and constantly updating one’s antivirus is a good precaution against such.

Another way of avoiding email scams is by filtering spam and learning the lesson that not everyone that contacts you using your email address should be trusted. Many people have fallen as victims of email scams when it could have been avoided by taking extra precaution.
